Has your grocery store “bloomed” yet? Springtime is a great opportunity to try out some new fruits and vegetables; each offers unique vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients that will help support your whole family’s gut, immune, and cardiorespiratory function (and more!). Not only will your in-season produce taste better, it will also lighten the load at the cash register too.

Chances are you know someone who has a food allergy. The most common allergies are: peanuts, tree nuts, milk, wheat, soy, eggs, and seafood. For kids with food allergies, the world can be a scary place, especially when a parent isn’t around, because a very small amount of an allergen could cause life-threatening issues. That’s why we have to keep schools safe by being mindful about food allergies.
If you’re a parent of a child with a food allergy:
- Make sure to let your child’s teacher know about the allergy.
- Ensure there is an epinephrine “pen” (that has not expired) available at the nurse’s office for emergencies.
- Have your child wear a medical alert bracelet.
- Keep allergy-free snacks at school that are safe for classroom parties or snack times.
If your child doesn’t have a food allergy:
- Ask if there are children with food allergies in your child’s class.
- Check food labels before packing snacks and lunches to make sure they are safe.
- Find food alternatives for common allergens here.

“Intuitive eating” is the newly established theory that humans of all ages have the ability to rely on their natural and internal cues, which will ultimately lead to a well-rounded healthy diet. The cool thing is that all humans are born as intuitive eaters; they don’t have any influential opinions or experiences. Parents can do a lot to create a positive experience around food. A few things you can start doing today are:
- Avoid labeling foods as “good” or “bad” when talking about them.
- Offer many different foods (ideally one from each food group) at each mealtime, even if you think they won’t touch it.
- Be flexible with food preferences as they change, but don’t cater to only serving them.
- Look at weight and intake over a period of time; a day is not a good reflection of overall trends.
