March is National Nutrition Month, and this year’s theme, "Food Connects Us," invites us to explore the diverse and delicious ways food brings people together. Trying new foods from different cultures not only expands your family’s palate but also offers an opportunity to learn about the traditions, history, and values behind those dishes. Whether it's making a homemade sushi roll, tasting Mexican tamales, or enjoying Ethiopian injera, these experiences can spark curiosity and open doors to meaningful cultural conversations. By incorporating a variety of foods from around the world, we enrich our diets and strengthen the connections we share with others. Visit the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics site to find more about cuisines and traditions for many global cultures at EatRight. Pick one each week with your family to explore and create a recipe together!

Spring is the perfect time to refresh your pantry and fridge, creating a healthier environment for your family’s meals. Start by organizing whole grains, fresh produce, and lean proteins in easy-to-reach spots, get rid of expired items, and place processed snacks in out-of-sight areas. Group similar items together and label containers for better visibility and access. These simple kitchen "spring cleaning" tips can encourage healthier eating habits by making nutritious options the most convenient choice.

Nutrition plays a key role in supporting your child’s brain health and focus throughout the day. Start with a balanced breakfast, including whole grains, protein, and healthy fats—like oatmeal with nuts and berries or scrambled eggs with avocado—to fuel their brain for learning. For lunch and dinner, include foods rich in omega-3s, like salmon or chia seeds, as well as colorful fruits and vegetables packed with antioxidants to protect brain cells. Snack on nuts, seeds, or yogurt for added brain power between meals. By fueling their body with nutrient-rich foods, you’re helping your child stay sharp, energized, and ready to learn!
Here’s a sample meal plan to get you thinking: ● Breakfast: Oatmeal w/ Chia Seeds + Berries ● Snack: Apple Slices + Nut Butter ● Lunch: Tuna Salad Wrap + Carrot Sticks and Ranch + Popcorn ● Snack: Greek Yogurt + Banana ● Dinner: Whole Wheat Pasta w/ Tomato Sauce and Lean Meat + Sauteed Spinach

Repurposing dinner leftovers is a great way to save time and create quick, nutritious lunches for your kids. Try adding leftover chicken into a stuffed baked potato. Add leftover ground beef to your kid’s favorite mac & cheese or make a small hamburger slider. Leftover beans can be added to a quesadilla or mashed into a spread for a tasty and filling sandwich. These ideas make for easy, hearty, and flavorful lunches that your kids will love!
