As the weather gets chillier, there’s nothing more satisfying than cozying up with a bowl of warm soup. Soups are typically thin and light - made with a broth base and include other veggies, grains, and meat amongst delicious seasonings. On the other hand, chowders are typically thick and rich – made of similar ingredients but kept chunky and thickened with flour, starch, and/or cream.
Try these two homemade, hearty, and healthy recipes this month, perfect for the winter season. Loaded Cheesy Cauliflower Soup: https://therealfooddietitians.com/loaded-cheesy-cauliflower-soup/ Chicken Corn Chowder: https://therealfooddietitians.com/slow-cooker-chicken-corn-chowder/

As the days become shorter during this time of year, our kids struggle with not seeing the sun quite as much as they are used to. Not only does the sun provide vitamin D for our physical health, it also helps to regulate hormones and circadian rhythms. When these get off balance, it is possible to develop Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), which is characterized by extreme fatigue, feeling gloomy, and poor concentration during the winter months. Staying active and taking advantage of the daylight are the best ways to prevent and even treat SAD.
Try these ideas to keep your kids active:
|
|
|
- Dress warm (depending on your geographic area) and take a walk each day.
- Walk up and down the stairs every 15 minutes while watching TV, doing homework, or playing a video game.
- Make a list of active chores to be done around the house, and complete one each evening.
- Find an indoor play area to attend with a friend or family member.
