National Watermelon Day

We tend to send lots of love to watermelon all summer long, but August 3rd is National Watermelon Day, the perfect opportunity to celebrate this vitamin C-rich fruit! There’s nothing more refreshing on a hot summer day than sorbet, so make your own with some frozen watermelon to celebrate. Despite it being perfect just as it is once you cut it up, you can also make a fun fruit-tastic watermelon pizza with your kids, or a spicy watermelon salsa for a more sustainable snack.

Balancing Meals

MyPlate recommendations are very applicable for many people with different preferences, allergies, clinical diets, and cultures. The one great takeaway you can remember with this is BALANCE. When planning or preparing meals for your kids, make sure to have variety of each food group – fruit, vegetable, protein, dairy, or grain – even if you’re not sure they’ll try or like it. Each gives them certain nutrients that their bodies need to grow and develop. Is your child used to eating chicken tenders and fries for lunch? Great; pair them with some celery sticks. Find other ideas on Nemours KidsHealth site!

After-Sports Snacks

Your kids might be more active now that the weather is so nice outside, whether involved in organized sports or playing with friends at the playground. If your kid is exercising, it is important to promote full-body recovery with great snacks afterwards. No, they don’t need protein powder shakes, but having some snack ideas with both protein and carbohydrates will help replenish energy and rebuild muscles. Check out these dietitian-approved snack pairings for great ideas sure to please your child or the whole team after a game. And, don’t forget about staying hydrated, of course!

Back-to-School Eye Exam

Vision is important for everyone, of course, but in children it is vital that they are able to see appropriately because it can impact the way they learn, behave, and participate in school and at home. As part of your child’s back-to-school checklist, make sure their pediatrician performs a vision screening, and may recommend a comprehensive eye exam if there are concerns found. Some important things to remember when

  • Limit the time your child is in front of a screen to reduce strain.
  • Add fruits and vegetables to meet vitamin and mineral requirements.
  • Encourage plenty of sleep to allow eyes to rest and heal.

If you’re doing all of these, check out even more tips provided by the CDC to make sure you are optimizing your child’s visual health and overall wellbeing, especially prior to restarting school!
