Making Healthy Food Changes in the New Year
 
Getting back into the groove of work and school can seem like a bit of a challenge, and usually the weather doesn’t help motivations much. Perhaps this is one reason why the idea of starting something anew following the holidays always seems to be top of mind. With regards to food, there are ways to make healthy choices for your family that will last well into the coming months. Smaller, more manageable changes typically produce relatively longer lasting results. Food specific ideas include:
 
  • Including your kids in lunch packing. Their inclusion can increase their buy in to buy, try, and eat new things.
  • Adding “Meatless Monday” to your weekly dinner themes. Incorporating a meatless day encourages the use of foods such as legumes, which have many nutritional benefits.
  • Taking a cooking class to fine tune your skills that will later save you time in the kitchen.
  • Reviewing your meal planning and prepping routine and adjusting so that it better serves you and your family’s priorities.
  • Avoiding extreme diet measures as these tend to be temporary and oftentimes disruptive.
  • Trying new foods is a great way to increase the overall variety of your diet, which is key to eating a healthy eating pattern over time.

How to Start or Continue Daily Movement
 
There is a lot of research on the positive effects of physical activity. Within the last decade, more research has emerged on the effects that movement has on the brain. With what some call “post-holiday let down” and cloudier skies, a little exercise may go a long way in terms of mental health this January. Here are a few tips on making it happen:
 
  • Outdoor exercise is still possible during winter months. You will need to check your weather conditions and buy appropriate outdoor gear, which can still be relatively inexpensive compared to the cost of certain workout classes.
  • Consider a group challenge, such as a walking app like YUMUUV or FitBit where you can challenge yourself, the app, or friends.
  • Consider joining a community center or gym, such as the YMCA, that offers up an indoor track and pool in addition to traditional workout equipment.
  • Take on more of the more exertive at-home chores such as raking leaves or shoveling snow.
  • Budget in more specific group exercise classes such as yoga and pilates.
