Spring into National Nutrition Month
 
Mark your calendars – March 20th is the first day of spring! It’s also fitting that March is National Nutrition Month, because springtime brings so many opportunities to promote wellness at the table and beyond. Check in with how you are prioritizing nutrition in your home:
 
  • Am I offering all of the food groups – protein, grains, fruit, vegetables, dairy – each day?
  • Am I preparing a new fruit or vegetable each week to broaden our taste preferences?
  • Am I including my kids in weekly meal planning or daily preparation?
  • Is our family sitting down to eat meals as a family most days of the week?
  • Am I leading by example by brining positivity to conversations regarding food?
 
If any of these answers are “no” – there is no better time than now to start working towards great nutrition and wellbeing! Try some of the recommendations and activities that the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics has published during National Nutrition Month.

Brain Health and Omega 3 Fatty Acids
 
Omega-3 fatty acids have gained lots of popularity recently for their great heart-health benefits, however they’re incredible important for children because of their role in growth and development. It’s best to get this essential nutrient from oily fish, like salmon, sardines, or tuna. Since these are likely not your kids’ favorite foods, it’s also important to note that there is a good amount in flaxseed, as well as other fortified foods (eggs, yogurt, milk). There are omega-3 supplements on the market, and although the research is lacking, there are many potential benefits to getting enough in the diet (through food or supplementation) including increased sleep, attention span, learning ability, and school performance because of its role in brain development.

Never used flaxseed before? Try these tips and more!
 
  • Bake ground flaxseed into homemade breads, muffins, oatmeal, and pancakes.
  • Add sprinkle of flaxseed to smoothies or yogurt.
  • Stir small amounts into flaxseed into pasta sauces, casseroles, or soups.

Hype Up by Staying Hydrated
 
Spring sports are back in session, and your kids are likely going back to their busy selves outside. So even though hydration is important all year long, it’s even more imperative during times of higher activity. Water is the best source of hydration and aids in many important metabolic reactions that impact energy level, strength, and organ function. If your child is struggling to drink enough water or other fluids, try considering make one of the following changes to build interest in staying hydrated this spring!
 
What we put it in: Find a fun, colorful water bottle
What we add to it: Add some cut up fruit or sugar-free flavor drops
How they will drink it: Purchase a bendy or swirly straw to put in their cup/bottle
How they can “eat” it: Add in foods high in water content like melons, celery, strawberries, oranges, cucumbers, or peaches.
