Spooky Snacks

The highly anticipated holiday of Halloween is right around the corner! Although the spirit of the season includes costumes and candy, there are so many ways to celebrate this spooky holiday with some creative healthy snacks for your kids. Try adding the following to your kid’s lunch box or set out as a trick-or-treating recovery snack.

  • Ghoulish Tortilla Chips – cut out tortillas using ghost, pumpkin, or leaf cookie cutter, bake in the oven, and then serve with some salsa or guacamole (Spooky Baked Halloween Chips)
  • Sweet ‘n Salty Monster Mouth – assemble a “monster mouth” by using apples as lips, nut butter as gums, and marshmallows as giant teeth (Kid’s FUN Teeth & Mouth Snack – Great for Halloween too!)
  • Sticky Monster Eyes – create a creepy eyeball by forming a homemade Rice Krispie treat (colored, of course) into a ball and place a candy eye in the center to complete the illusion (Monster Eye Balls Rice Krispie Bites)

Whole Grains = Whole Nutrition

The main grains in our diet – wheat, rice, corn, and oats – are typically processed in a way that makes them softer, lighter, and more shelf stable. This practice removes the fiber, vitamins, minerals, and protein from the starch, leaving a “refined grain” as the final product. It is best to choose products that are either made with whole grains (see the whole grain label emblem) or bake your own food items using whole wheat or other unprocessed flours. For ideas on how to add more whole grains to you and your child’s diet, see some tips at How to Choose More Tasty Whole Grains with Your Kids.

Breakfast – the Best Way to Start the Day

As the schedule gets busier with the start of school, healthy meals and snacks get more difficult to prepare. One way to ensure your child (and you!) can get a great jump start to the day is to start the morning with a breakfast high in protein and fiber. Both of these can help keep you full, provide good nutrition, and increase concentration and energy levels. If you find yourself stocking your pantries with some of the following items, try replacing them for more nutritious options that can be just as quick to prepare.

Try this Instead of this
Overnight oats or whole grain cereal (Cheerios, Chex) Sugary cereal or instant oatmeal
Whole grain granola bars (KIND, Kodiak, Madegood) Sugary breakfast bars or muffins
Whole grain frozen waffles (Kodiak) Frozen waffles or pancakes (Eggo)
Yogurt – add fruit or granola Breakfast drinks or fruit juice
Whole wheat english muffin add nut butter or jam White toast or Toaster pastries
