A Kitchen for Kids

If you’ve got a picky eater or heavy snacker on your hands at home, the best way to build interest and appreciation for food is to get your kids involved in the kitchen. Now, that doesn’t mean appointing them head chef will solve every concern, however there are many food-related tasks and choices that you make every day in which you could include your children. Try picking one of the following to try out one time and see how it goes!

  • Talk about the food groups with your child at your next meal, pointing out what each food on their plate provides.
  • Review a cookbook or online recipe hub (like this one) to choose one recipe to try next weekend.
  • Let your child take on one age-appropriate task at your next meal or snack time – see some ideas here.

Packing in the Protein

With school back in session, it probably feels like you are having to stash a ton of snacks in your pantry and fridge to help satiate their ravenous appetites when they get back from school or sports each day. One thing that can help hold them over is adding some protein to their breakfasts, lunches, and snacks you send with them. Here are a few foods that you may not think of that provide good protein:

  • Oats & Oatmeal
  • Yogurt & Smoothies
  • Eggs – scrambled, hard-boiled, etc.
  • Nuts & Nut butter
  • Beans & Lentils
  • Fish – baked or canned
  • Lean meats & Poultry

Since some of these foods are typically served hot and fresh, you can find some great protein-packed recipes that your kids will love here.

Every-Body is Perfect – Promoting Positive Body Image

As a parent, you know that you are the best role model for your kids! One thing we can do to instill positive body image in them from a young age is to make sure that you’re being mindful of how you comment about weight and bodies as well. It’s a hard habit to build sometimes, but EatRight.org has some great tips for ways to focus on health, nutrition, and fitness – not just on how much we weigh or what our body looks like – especially during critical years as your kids grow up.
