Winter Veggies – Good for Both Budget & Health
|
Cold weather brings a new variety of nutrient-packed vegetables to the table. Veggies like Brussels sprouts, sweet potatoes, parsnips, and winter squash are full of vitamins, fiber, and flavor. Roasting them brings out natural sweetness that kids often enjoy, but sometimes it can be intimidating to cook a new veggie. Winter is a great time to introduce these cozy, colorful foods to family meals – check out recipes and ideas here. |

Balancing Holiday Plates |
Big holiday meals can feel overwhelming for parents trying to keep things healthy. Just as with other meals throughout the year, it is the parent’s responsibility is to offer good options at each scheduled mealtime, but it is the child’s job to choose if and how much they will eat. It’s absolutely appropriate to offer and enjoy holiday favorites, but ensure you still have balanced meals by having veggies and fruits available as you normally would. Instead of depriving the family of the traditional sides and sweets you may enjoy, this is a perfect time to teach about balance, moderation, and intuitive eating – healthy habits that will last beyond the season. |

Sanitizer vs Washing Hands – Which is Best? |
With germs spreading a lot easier now, it is important to remind children of personal hygiene habits that can help keep everyone happy and healthy this winter. In recent years, it has become fairly common to keep some hand sanitizer in our cars and purses to kill those pesky bugs anywhere at any time. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), though, recommends using good ‘ol water and soap when possible, especially when preparing food or if there is visible dirt or grease, scrubbing for at least 20 seconds. However, hand sanitizer can help destroy a good number of germs as well when we’re not able to do so. Picking a sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol and letting it dry after rubbing it in are two ways to increase its effectiveness. For more information on these CDC guidelines, read EatRight’s summary here. |
